Is there any way to setup a password for airplay playback? I know shairport-sync supports it but I cannot find a shairport-sync.conf file on my Pi. Maybe it needs to be passed to the daemon in the startup script?

Yep I think you’d need to manually edit the shairport daemon startup script in /etc/init.d/shairport-sync.conf (or something like that) and add it there.
